Overview

The Champion Junior Lifesaver Development Day is a reward and recognition day for youth members that have gone above and beyond within their respected clubs. It is an opportunity to come together with like-minded members to build on SRC skills, participate in development workshops and take an in depth look into the different services and pathways through Life Saving Victoria.

Members nominated for the day will be in the running for the Mike Martin Champion Junior Lifesaver award, to recognise and celebrate the achievements and commitment of our youth members to their club and lifesaving movement.

The Development Day will be facilitated by a team of experienced and skilled LSV volunteer leaders.

Program Objectives

Recognise and showcase the valuable contribution youth members provide to the lifesaving movement

Encourage a culture of responsible and positive youth members that are seen as role models amongst their peers

Provide an opportunity to build on the development of fundamental lifesaving skills through scenario-based training

Provide members with confidence and support that will assist them as they transition to the next phase of their lifesaving journey

Nomination Criteria

All clubs are encouraged to nominate a female and male candidate to represent their club. Nominees must be 13 or 14 years of age at the time of the program and typically are members who go above and beyond in your club.

Nominees are to be chosen with consideration to the following areas:

Hold current SRC award. Note: Members that hold their bronze medallion are ineligible to be nominated.

Provide valuable contribution to their club’s activities

Lifesaving knowledge

Are seen as a role model and future leader amongst their peers

Mike Martin Champion Junior Lifesaver Award

The Mike Martin Champion Junior Lifesaver Award forms part of LSV’s member recognition awards and celebrates the achievements and commitment of our youth members.

The overarching aim of this award is to showcase the important contribution of our youth members to lifesaving as well as encourage the development of strong, confident and committed youth members who will become the leaders of the lifesaving movement long into the future.

The winner of the award will be announced at the end of the Development Day at the end of day ceremony. They then will be invited to attend the 2022 LSV Awards of Excellence where they will be formally acknowledged and receive the Mike Martin, Champion Junior Lifesaver Award.

Award Selection Process:

The 2023 Mike Martin Champion Junior Lifesaver Award, will be selected on the following criteria:

1. Nominees’ application to the Champion Junior Lifesaver Development Day
2. Endorsement support letter provided by the club
3. Online interview conducted prior to the day (outline of questions will be provided)
4. On-day participation; demonstration of leadership and teamwork attributes as well as lifesaving knowledge and skills

Cost

$45 per participant (inc GST). LSV will invoice clubs for the cost of the Development Day. It is up to each club and participant to agree on how much each party will contribute.

Application Process

Nominees are required to complete the following to apply:

1. Complete an online application, which includes answering short questions regarding club and lifesaving involvement and future aspirations. These answers must be completed by the nominee and not the parent/guardians
2. Provide a letter or email of endorsement from a club committee member to support the nominees application

Youth Involvement Program (YIPs)

Retention of members aged 14-18 years in lifesaving seems to be a difficult task for Life Saving Clubs across Victoria. The Youth Involvement Program (YIP’s) aims to overcome this retention issue and helps develop and engage our young members.

YIP’s was originally designed by the Anglesea Surf Lifesaving Club in 2002. After great success the program has been adopted by Life Saving Victoria and many other clubs across Australia.

Over the past season we have seen hundreds of Victoria’s youth start their involvement in YIPs. In simple terms the YIPs program will reward you for all the good work you do at your club. You can get points for patrols, water safety, organising club functions, mentoring, training and assessing just to name a few areas.

Once enrolled, participants can make their way through the bronze, silver and gold levels of the program. Each level requires the participants to achieve a basic number of points and then they will be rewarded with achieving the level. Participants will be rewarded for their involvement in the following activities:

Patrolling

Competition

Club Activities or Fundraisers

Coaching & Officiating

Mentoring & Assisting with Junior Programs

Other activities associated with your club can be used to gather points. The programs flexibility allows for YIPs Coordinators to create points opportunities to all involved specific to their strengths and skills.

18-25 Mentor Program

Overview

The 18 – 25 Mentor Program supports the development of young leaders by pairing them with experienced mentors to help them face the challenges of current and future leadership roles. It also provides a platform to develop leadership credentials, build on current skillsets, and provide a framework to assist with reaching leadership goals.

The program offers opportunities for our lifesaving leaders to impart their knowledge and real-life experiences and impact the next generation by taking on the role of mentor.

Mentors can gain specific skills, broaden their perspectives, and increase their own connections.

The Mentor Program is a six-month formal partnership between mentor and mentee, during which mentors will guide and support their mentees through agreed goals throughout the season.

Applications are now open for the 2023/24 M2M Program. Are you looking to grow your leadership skills and work towards set goals within lifesaving? Life Saving Victoria (LSV) is currently seeking both mentee participants and mentors for the 2023/24 18-25 mentee mentor program. The program will take place from October 2023 to April 2024 and is a 6-month formal partnership between the mentee and mentor.

A club endorsement from an appropriate committee member is required with the online mentee application.

LSV will match mentors with mentees based on experience, aspirations and best fit. A mentor agreement will be signed by both parties at the commencement of the program.

Building Leaders Scholarship

Youth volunteers are central to the growth of aquatic education and training and provide LSV with a unique opportunity to assume a genuine leadership role in the community. Life Saving Victoria (LSV) acknowledges the importance and impact of the youth demographic on the success of the organisation and is therefore committed to their continuous personal development.

The Building Leaders Scholarship has the ability to engage and empower youth demographic by providing meaningful leadership development, specialised training and the opportunity to access advanced skills and knowledge under the guidance of mentors from lifesaving, business and the community.

The Building Leaders Scholarship will attract, motivate and retain youth volunteers from LSV and other community organisations over a six month period. Scholars will benefit from exposure to international lifesaving practices and training, unique cultural experiences, knowledge building and opportunities to utilise and further develop skills learnt during the program.

What’s in it for me?

The Building Leaders Scholarship is a unique and innovative professional development program, challenging and empowering participants as they move through their Leadership Pathway. This program will provide you with opportunities to excel both personally and professionally through meaningful workshops, advanced leadership development and specialised training.

Core leadership competencies will be established under the guidance of experts from lifesaving, business and the community; exposing you to state wide professional and lifesaving networks to assist in identifying individual leadership pathways.

In 2020, the Building Leaders Scholarship program will again entail a ten day (approx) delivery program in Sri Lanka. During the trip scholars will provide lifesaving training to a range of participants whilst gainin exposure to international lifesaving practices and training, as well as unique and real cultural experiences.
Life Saving Victoria is dedicated to developing the next generation of leaders and believes that you (18-25 year old) hold the key to the growth of aquatic education and training.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Who Can Apply? Scholar applicants should be:

Active Victorian member of Life Saving Victoria aged between 18-25 years

Hold prerequisite awards

Committed to full participation in the program, including the overseas trip

Able to work independently, or as part of a team

Able to demonstrate innovative thinking and take a proactive approach

Skilled in communication and have highly developed interpersonal skills

Driven to take up a leadership position within lifesaving and/or the wider community

Prerequisites:

Mandatory Prerequisites – applicants must hold all the following prerequisites

Bronze Medallion, First Aid (HLTAID003) including current CPR (HLTAID001), Silver Medallion Beach Management and Current Working with Children Check

Mandatory Prerequisites – applicants must hold one or more of  the following prerequisites

Inland Waterways Lifesaving Certificate (IWLSC), Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Driver, Rescue Watercraft (RWC), LSV Comms Operator Experience

Desirable Prerequisites – One of more of the following would be advantageous but not mandatory

Club Captain, Chief Instructor, Patrol Captain, Training Officer Certificate (TOC), Participation at Advanced Life Saving Camp, Pool Lifeguard, Beach Lifeguard, Austswim or equivalent – Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety

How much will it cost me?

The total cost of your participation in this program is $1200.00 (inc. GST) per scholar; inclusive of the trip to Sri Lanka. The Scholarship will cover all leadership and technical training workshops, meals throughout the workshops and resources; plus economy airfares, travel insurance, visas, hotel accommodation and meals for each participant in Sri Lanka.

LSV will invoice each successful scholar $1200.00 (incl. GST). It is up to each scholar as to whether they seek sponsorship from their club or an alternative community organisations.

Time Commitment:

The Scholarship program will consist of 5 double weekends (Saturday & Sunday) and two single weekend sessions which will take place from June to December, with the 10 day (approx.) overseas trip occurring in November. The program concludes with a single weekend day of workshops in December. Successful scholars will be expected to attend and participate in all program components and sessions.

The Women in Lifesaving panel is excited to announce that registrations are now open for Ready 2 Lead 2022. This year’s program will ignite and explore the potential of our emerging leaders from lifesaving, aquatics and emergency services.

The aim is to assist all participants to recognise the impact they have as leaders, providing them with the skills, structured sessions, and a targeted approach to support ongoing commitment to their development.
