The Keep Watch Home Pool Safety Campaign is a public safety program that is an initiative of Royal Life Saving. It aims to remind Home Pool owners of the need to provide a safe pool environment for their family and friends and has produced a range of resources to assist them in doing so. Specifically the program is hoping to reduce fatal and non-fatal drowning incidences of children under the age of 5 years.
The Keep Watch program consists of four key actions, which are:
20 Seconds is all it takes to drown – Play It Safe By The Water
Pool Safety Barriers
All residential swimming pools and spas with a depth greater than 30cm require an appropriate safety barrier (e.g. a pool fence). There are three sets of requirements for swimming pool and spa barriers in Victoria, based on when your pool or spa was constructed:
Before 8th April 1991
Between 8th April 1991 – 30th April 2010
After 1st May 2010

The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) Pool and Spa Safety Barriers Self-Assessment App can help you assess the compliance of your home pool or spa against the most recent Australian Standard. The assessment will cover the i) safety barrier, ii) entry gate, iii) surrounding areas and iv) pool chemicals.
